Kuala Lumpur City Conversation on the FPIs

On 25 November 2018, the first day of the 16 Days of Activism, a small conversation was held at Malaysia Design Archive in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to introduce the Feminist Principles of the Internet to the attendees and to discuss our experiences as Malaysians / women / citizens / people / feminists / etc online. It was moderated by Syar S. Alia with support from APC.

Attendees participated in an Embodying the Internet exercise where they populated a 2D human figure with their personal online experiences and engagements that evoke physical feelings and/or action. The discussions focused on the nuances of human relationships online - How do we be kinder to each other? How can the internet facilitate real life? What does it mean when an acquaintance retweets you but doesn't 'like' your posts? - as well as the validity of all different forms of online engagement, from attempts at building new versions and spaces, to subversion within existing problematic platforms. The Principles under the Embodiment cluster - Consent, Privacy & Data, Anonymity, Memory, and even Children and Youth - were explored as we discussed what it means to be modern beings that are now, almost by default, hybrids of real/virtual/online/offline/digital/analog.

You can read the full report of the conversation in the report PDF here - it includes the exercises we did as well as the discussion points that emerged. Mindmaps of the Embodying the Internet exercise were generated from the participants' responses and can be viewed as a PDF file. The FPI presentation slides (with localized Malaysian examples) are also available here.
